"O Captain! My Captain!" and "Dead Poets Society"

"O Captain! My Captain!" is a post-Civil War poem about the death of President Abraham Lincoln.
This is a video segment from "Dead Poets Society", with Robin Williams. It's one of my favorite movies from high school. I find it inspiring when it comes to learning about poetry, and it goes over a good deal of poetry. I dare you to watch the movie if you haven't!

  1. I love this. I've watched bits and pieces of The Dead Poets Society in almost every single one of my teaching classes, but I've never seen the whole thing.

    1. I watched the whole thing in high school for a combined English-History activity. Carpe Diem!

    3. Kirsten, I just realized what you meant by teaching classes. I totally get that. I watched segments in the History and Philosophy of Education during my time up at BYU-Idaho.

  2. This is definitely one of my favorite scenes from the movie and I love that you included it in a post. It's one of the first things that came to my mind when we talked about poetry and modern media.

    1. I posted it because of "O Captain! My Captain!", since that is what they talk about in the movie. Of course the clip didn't show that, or even the Carpe Diem scene, but I'm glad I could incorporate.

    2. Can you find a clip of the Whitman-inspired scene? Could be revealing.

    3. There is a clip, but the video doesn't really show it that much.
