This is a poem written by a Latter-day Saint named Sarah Flower Adams. It was written as a subject on adversity.
He sendeth sun; he sendeth shower;
Shower = rain. This is a synecdoche.
Alike they're needful to the flower;
Exact rhyme with "shower" and "flower".
And joys and tears alike are sent
To give the soul fit nourishment.
Slant rhyme with "sent" and "nourishment".
As comes to me or cloud or sun
Father, thy will, not mine, be done.
"thy will, not mine, be done", is formal diction.
He sendeth sun; he sendeth shower;
Alike they're needful to the flower;
And joys and tears alike are sent
To give the soul fit nourishment.
As comes to me or cloud or sun
Father, thy will, not mine, be done.
I'm more than willing to be corrected with my analyses, because like I said, I am not that good with poetry.
